MARKETING MEANS BUSINESS

I have always wanted to be a Lawyer, but by a stroke of luck or something akin to it, I became a marketer. I thank my luck that I am in the field of marketing. it has been a discipline that I am extremely proud of it.

My marketing career actually started in my early life. I think at around age seven. In one of the previous posts i mentioned my sweet, kind and enterprising grandmother. I used to follow her to towns and village markets every market days- selling various items like dried meat(called Tinko or Kundi), stock fish, among others. I was exposed to the art of buying and selling in my early childhood. No wonder marketing is part of my life.

Child rights or what is now known as Child abuse was not known during my early childhood because various wares had been put on my head to go and sell. I used to sell dried fish, smoked fish, vegetables and okro. I even do weave baskets on my own and sell to keep the money and generate own pocket money. We do these, not with compulsion but with joyous mind of contributing to the well being of the family. I love to race home to my grandmother any day i sold off all my items in good time. Likewise I feel bad the day market is bad and I didn't sell well.

The business I was doing during those early life is basically marketing. Marketing means business. Business is marketing.

In todays' world, everything business matter has marketing as its cornerstone.
What then is Marketing?
It is a business discipline. it is a philosophy . It is a process. in short, marketing has to do with satisfying customer needs and wants at a profit to the organization. It is the 'performance of business activities that direct the flow of goods and services from producer  to consumer'.

Marketing has also been described as the performance of those activities which seek to accomplish an organization's objectives by anticipating customer or client needs and directing a flow of need-satisfying goods and services from producer to customer or client.

The essence of the above definitions  show that Marketing means business. Every organization either profit oriented or non- profit oriented has to get involved with marketing. The Product, The Price, the  Distribution (Place), the Promotion ,  are all elements that make marketing tick.

Are you in business? Are you a marketer? No matter what your discipline is, as long as you engage in any form of business, you are a marketer.

Marketing means business.
